HISTORY OF BARBER YARD

A STORY OF AMERICAN INDUSTRIALISM

Originally purchased in 1901 by industrialist 'O.C.' Barber, as the home of the Diamond Match Factory, the Barber Yard neighborhood was the home of many employees, with a community that included a social hall, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and town shops.

1906

Barber Yard was originally built as the home of the Diamond Match Factory, by 'O.C' Barber.  

1975

The Diamond Match Factory operated in Barber Yard until 1975. The Louisiana Pacific Lumber Company then operated it from 1984 to 1989

2020

Barber Yard is acquired by local developer Dan Gonzales

2025

Gonzales Development Company breaks ground on their new vision for Barber Yard

THE VISION

The Barber Yard development in Chico, CA, is set to become a cornerstone of the community, reflecting the hardworking spirit and strong values of the area’s blue-collar culture.

This mixed-use project will bring together residential, commercial, and retail spaces to create an inspired neighborhood where local workers and families can thrive. With a focus on practicality and community, Barber Yard will offer affordable housing options alongside places for local businesses to grow and serve their neighbors.

The development will feature gathering spaces, parks, and walkways, encouraging connection and fostering a sense of pride and belonging among residents. Barber Yard aims to honor Chico’s working-class roots while creating a space where people can build a future together.

16th Street

Lined with original palm trees, 16th Street is one of two main promenades running through Barber Yard. 16th Street will be lotted with single family homes, duplexes, and townhomes.

Engineering Building

The last original building still standing in Barber Yard. The Engineering building will serve as a social hub and gathering space.

The Diamond

The Diamond will be Barber Yards very own baseball field! An original amenity to Barber Yard, the field will be regulation size and will host Little League and CARD games. 

The Plaza

Located in the footprint of a former factory building, the Plaza will serve as an open social area, large enough for multiple groups and even concerts.

Near the entrance of Barber Yard on 16th Street, will be a stand serving fresh produce grown on site. Currently the location of Burns Blossom Farms.

Repurposing the existing warehouse, Barber Yard will boast an athletic facility, supporting soccer, pickle ball, basketball & more. 

Across the street from The Diamond will be Barber Yard's very own palm tree lined dog park.

Saving the ruins from former Barber Yard buildings, Rubble Park will be a community outdoor space showcasing remnants of its past.

ABOUT THE DEVELOPER

Dan Gonzales is the founder and owner of Gonzales Development Company, based in Chico, California. He earned his Civil Engineering degree from Chico State in 1986 and pursued a career as a licensed professional engineer.

Dan understands and shares a passion for building environments that take a more holistic approach to creating a sense of place and connection. This was his inspiration for the master plan of Barber Yard.

Always intrigued by the challenge and opportunities of land development, Gonzales seeks to create in Barber Yard, a thriving, vibrant community that provides economic sustainability, social connection and healthy living for current and future generations of Chico.
